The estimated population in 1910 was 4,320,000. The capital, Bogota (pop. 150,300), lies 9,000 feet above the sea. Tho chief commercial towns are Barranquilla (40,200), connected with the coast by 17 miles of railway; Cartagena (27,000); Medellin (60,000) a mining centre; Bucaramanga (30,000); Cucuta (10,000), the last two being coffee centres.
